Pristine Historic Home - Circa 1904

Own a magnificent piece of history: A circa 1904 Richard Sharp Smith designed home, located next to The Grove Park Inn - minutes away from downtown Asheville, North Carolina. The main house has 5 bedrooms and 2.5 baths - plus a separate guest apartment. 80 Edgemont is a “four square”, with two and a half stories and a wrap porch. It appears in the oldest photographs of Proximity Park. (Now called Grove Park Neighborhood.)

This home is an English-derived craftsman plan of Richard Sharp Smith. Titled “Cottage B”, it was originally planned for Biltmore Village. However, the original owners were so impressed with the floor-plan they had it built in Proximity Park - an affluent suburb developed by a group of citizens wanting the convenience of living near the newly formed Swannanoa Golf and Country Club. (Now called the Grove Park Inn Golf Club.) Proximity Park figures prominently in Asheville's history, involving names such as George Pack, Richard Howland, C.V. Reynolds and Annie Mae Reynolds Sumner. (A former owner of 80 Edgemont, and niece of Governor Vance).

This century-old beauty has been lovingly cared for over the generations. Everything from the diamond patterned windows, to the interior moldings, to the heart of pine floors, is in pristine condition. The light from the stairs cascades throughout the house, enveloping everyone in its charm.

The latest renovation of 80 Edgemont, completed in 2005, was in the kitchen. The overarching theme is "Nature interacting within a forest." Granite counter tops represent a river, hand made glass within the cabinet doors represent clouds, and the ceiling, which represents clean air, is Carolina blue - with hand painted dragonflies playing on the walls. The new cabinets were made by Steve Tengelsen, a master furniture maker who teaches at Penland. The wall tiles were hand-made by Tzadi Turov, craftswoman from Celo Community.

80 Edgemont expands in many nurturing directions throughout the year. In winter it is the shelter one craves. The home easily sleeps ten - with lots of room for being quiet together or having conversations. In summer, it becomes a center for outdoors activity. Forty five people can sit down for an afternoon picnic on the porch.

Incidentally, the porch is also ideal for morning coffee, and there is a wonderful koi pond to relax by in the evenings. The garden blooms year-around.

Come and see why I love this space। It is the epitome of a Home.
